Photos of Niš, Serbia
I have been to Niš numerous times, and I can honestly tell you that I love it every single time I visit. Not only is Niš the third largest city in Serbia, but it’s a booming cultural and creative scene. Even though Serbia’s capital – Belgrade – or the famous Novi Sad, for the 1999 NATO boming, capture most tourists’ attention, Niš is a vibrant city that has a lot to offer to visitors.
Depending on the travel time allowed, the city’s historical landmarks and picturesque places can be visited in two to three days. I would really recommend visiting this wonderful city during a special event like the Movie Festival that occurs every August, or Panagjur in September.
Obrenoviceva
Obrenoviceva is a street in Nis, Serbia about a half a kilometer long, pedestrian walking zone, filled with shops on both sides and cafes in the middle. During the summer and early Fall, this boulevard is filled with people sitting having drinks and deserts, people walking and eating ice cream or popcorn with their children, window shoppers and tourists.
There is an underground walkway with shopping stores located below Obrenoviceva.
Fortress of Niš
Taking Obrenoviceva all the way down – north – leads you straight to the Fortress of Niš. Before crossing the bridge over the river Nisheva, on the right side Trg Kralja Milana, Statue of Constantine, and the governor building are located by the Hotel Ambassador.
Standing on the bridge over River Nisheva, will give you an amazing view of the river. Perfect spot for picture taking, especially with the river and the fortress in the background. I recommend coming back here during the evening and taking a stroll down the river. It makes for a very romantic and picturesque evening.
Rest of Niš
Cele Kula (Skull Tower) is a monument that contains human skulls in a stone structure from a battle during the Ottoman Empire. Cele Kula doesn’t take a lot of time, but it’s worth the visit if you enjoy history. Also, near Cele Kula, there is a new shopping center with a Cinneplexx movie theater, STOP & SHOP.
